Celebrating World Book Day

World Book Day is recognized by over 100 countries around the world. It is celebrated on 23rd April with the purpose of encourage reading and help children to explore the pleasure of reading.   Book transform people’s lives! Bookworms all over the world are dedicating this special day to celebrate the magic of books!  

Some kindergartens hold a World Book Day event where they exchange an old book for new ones besides storytelling activities but it is also a great excuse for parents to be involved at home as well.  Convince the little ones that reading a book is more fun than watching television.  Ask the little ones to sit on our laps and start reading a book to them.

Check out the followings If you need inspiration for some activities for the little ones at home:-

  • Count how many books you have in the house
  • Encouraging your child to read a wide variety of books: Little red riding hood, Nanny McPhee, the Cat in the Hat and etc. Check our some of the recommendations here.
  • Do a mini book review for your child’s favourite book.
  • Pay a visit to the library or your friendly book store in the neighbourhood i.e. book tree! 
  • Bring your child to attend storytelling session  
  • Make homemade bookmark  
  • Read a book for the little ones
  • Dress your little ones as their favourite characters:- 

Some fun ideas:

Pinocchio – make a nose from kitchen roll tube!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar – dress them up in green and make a paper plate mask

Horrid Henry – normal boy clothes, but messy with a mischievous expression!

Fat Controller from Thomas stories – put them in grey trousers, yellow waistcoat, black jacket and black hat.

Thomas or other favourite engine – make Thomas out of a large cardboard box which child wears with straps over shoulders!

Harry and the Dinosaurs – wear normal clothes and carry a bucket of toy dinosaurs.

What better way to enjoy reading books than serving hot chocolate and cookies? Turn off the television, keep away all the electronics gadget and start reading now.

  • The first official World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April 1995. This is partly because Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare both died on this date, 23 April 1616. William Wordsworth would also die on 23 April, 1850 – St. George’s Day.
  • World book day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly it’s a celebration of reading initiated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
  • Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar has sold around 30 million copies.
