Pitter Patter Spring Tea Party (31 March 2013)
“Pitter Patter Spring Tea Party” was organized by Pitter Patter for parents-to-be on 31 March 2013 at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC), co-sponsored by Cellsafe, ABC campaign by Pfizer, Mead Johnson Nutrition as well as EnfaMama. The first antenatal workshop of 2013 consisted of talks conducted by professional speakers to promote and educate new parents on pregnancy, delivery, breastfeeding and vaccinations.
About 120 expecting parents queued up at the registration counter before the event started at 11am. They were then ushered to enjoy a sumptuous lunch buffet before the event started and also shopping spree happening at the bazaar selling products related to maternity and new born.
One of the highlight of the tea party is the spring fashion show by Dynas Nursing Attire. A team of pregnant women-turned-models displaying her latest spring collection comprises of a range of colourful, glamourous, fashionable, high quality and affordable trendy nursing attires and maternity outfit. Spotlights were on them as the expecting ladies elegantly showed off their bumps and perfect make up.
The antenatal workshop kicked off by Dr Khoo Boo Aik, Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist of Sunway Medical Centre who shared on Keeping Your Little One Safe and Healthy.
Dr Khoo shared tips on having healthy baby that leads to joyful/smart children as well as holistic, wise and caring adult. He also mentioned on the importance of safe sleeping position, balance nutrition, good personal hygiene, vaccination, allergy prevention as well as the importance of pre/probiotics, vaccinations and the impact of pneumococcal disease and rota virus.
After his talk, Pfizer shared video clips on Prevention of Pneumococcal Disease to create awareness of the dangers of Pneumococcal Disease. Parents-to-be gained valuable insight on Pneumococcal diseases awareness and tips to fight against the said diseases.
Next, Ms Khoo Chen ling, Nutritionist of Mead Johnson spoke on “Nutrition during Pregnancy and its myth: Weight gain, diet and food.” Her take home massage for the preggie includes practice balanced diet at all times, to have variety, Balance, Moderation, aim for appropriate weight gain and to maintain healthy lifestyle with adequate physical activity.
Participants were ushered to a tea break as well as to explore the mamalicous market on maternity products and services. Participants were busy taking notes and asking questions at the demo booths by nursing experts from Sunway Medical Centre. They were excited to have hands on experience learning the bonding tips especially on bathing, swaddling, changing & massage the new born.
After the afternoon tea break and shopping spree, the workshop continued with a talk by Dr Tan Ee Ping, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist of CT Women and Child Clinic, Pantai Hospital Cheras and Sunway Medical Centre on Preparing Yourself for A Successful Labour and Delivery.
She gave a detailed explanation on advantages and disadvantages of giving birth naturally and caesarean birth, what to expect during labour and delivery and various pain relief available. Her take home massage was that expecting couples need to know when to go to the hospital for delivery, what to pack, how to push and importance of ensuring no fever for mummy during confinement. The participants were seen focusing on her talk and making notes especially on the breathing exercises.
Next, Cellsafe International shared a video clip on stem cell banking focusing on the science of cord blood banking, reasons to store baby’s cord blood, the company background and their success stories.
At last, Pn Jasmine Tay Abdullah, certified & trained breastfeeding counsellor, shared on the key to successful breastfeeding and its benefits.
The participants were enlightened by Ms Jasmine’s humourous sharing on breastfeeding tips. It was all giggles and chatter throughout the session. “Breast milk are precious gift of love and even adopted mothers could breastfeed.
Besides sharing on breastfeeding benefits for both mummy and baby, she also shared on tips to overcome breastfeeding challenges, recipes for breastfeeding mothers as well as info on local breastfeeding support group.
The participants, mainly the first time parents, found the workshop informative and interesting, especially the tops on breastfeeding and what to expect during labour. They were pleased with the food and the programme prepared. We asked feedback from a few couples, they were impressed with the programme prepared and promised to come for our coming antenatal events.
The antenatal spring tea party concluded on a positive note as participants went home with their hands full, with fond memory of an enjoyable Sunday afternoon as well as knowledge gained and new friend found.
